The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has unearthed 9,469 illegal admissions across 20 tertiary institutions nationwide in the 2024 academic session.
The future of students with such admissions hangs in the balance as they are not recognised by JAMB and will not be mobilised for youth service.
JAMB explained that the admissions which fell under this category were conducted outside the government-certified Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).
Universities with such illegal admissions include Kano State University of Science and Technology, with 2,215 fake admissions, and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, with 1,215.
Other institutions listed by JAMB include Gombe State University, 1,164; Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, 761; Federal University of Technology, Owerri, 534; Ambrose Alli University, 514; Igbinedion University, 365; Akwa-Ibom Polytechnic, 340 and College of Nursing, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, 281.
They also included Achievers University, 267; Nigeria Police Academy, 263; Abia State Polytechnic, 256; Osun State University, 224; Federal University, Lafia, 189; Niger State Polytechnic, 182; Federal Polytechnic, Ida, 171 and Edo State Polytechnic,166.
Other listed institutions are Anchor University, 133; Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, 116 and the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, 113.
The Federal Government introduced CAPS to enhance transparency and efficiency. It is the online platform where prospective university students can monitor and manage their admission status.
The aim is to centralise the admission process and ensure that candidates receive equal treatment and fair consideration based on merit and institutional requirements.
Candidates can follow their admission journeys and be assured that they are evaluated based on consistent criteria.
CAPS facilitates expeditious processing of admissions by institutions, with candidates getting instant progress reports.
It would be recalled that the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, reminded stakeholders of the seriousness of the CAPS policy in Abuja at the 2025 policy meeting of JAMB last week.
The minister warned that all admissions outside CAPS were illegal and the candidates and institutions involved would be prosecuted and sanctioned.
