There was chaos at The Bell Hotel, a temporary accommodation for migrants seeking asylum in Epping, Essex, after a newly arrived immigrant was accused of multiple sexual offences.

Anti-immigration protesters stormed the hotel on Sunday evening apparently seeking to dislodge the offender and his mates, but were countered by anti-racism protesters.

The clash of the two groups led to violent skirmishes in which some people sustained injuries.

Thirty-eight-year-old Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, an Ethiopian national, was the cause of the whole trouble.

The man who arrived in the UK on June 29 faces multiple charges, including three sexual assaults.

He is also accused of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity.

Protesters chanted, “Protect our kids”, “Send them home”, among other slogans aimed at expressing their grievances at the continued accommodation of migrants in Britain.

The opposing side also chanted their own slogans, such as “Refugees Welcome: Stop the Far-Right”.

A video of the incident shows a man with a bloody gash above one of his eyes. It shows the police trying to keep the two sides away from each other.

One of the protesters, Adam Brooks, an anti-knife crime campaigner, expressed concerns about the alleged assaults perpetrated by Kebatu.

He also wondered why there was opposition to their protest against the crimes being perpetrated by many of the migrants.

Police chief, Superintendent Tim Tubbs, said citizens had a right to protest whichever way, provided it did not degenerate into violence.

He said his team was reviewing the bodycam footage captured at the scene to detect any law violations by anyone at the protest.
