The police in Anambra State have announced their victory over a gang of kidnappers who engaged them in a firefight on Saturday night at Akokpala, Aguata, Orumba Local Government Area of the state.
The police said they shot one of the kidnappers dead and rescued one of their victims.
The state police command’s Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga the raid was carried out by operatives of the police-led joint security force from the Forward Operating Base Aguata.
According to him, the men were on a ‘night visibility patrol’ when they encountered the hoodlum.
He announced that a female victim, 26, was rescued while one of the kidnappers was gunned down.
Items recovered from the gang include: a pump-action rifle, 11 live cartridges, one ash-coloured Toyota Camry Sedan with Reg. No: Lagos-EPE-208-FK and a police belt.
Other items recovered from the gang include a carton of Chelsea sachet alcoholic drink, a Zenith Bank ATM card, an axe, a small Tecno mobile phone, a packet of cigarettes, assorted charms and the sum of N2,700.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, thanked the security men involved in the operation for their gallantry.
Anambra has been in the news consistently in recent times for violent crimes, especially kidnapping. A commissioner was abducted in the state in 2019 and killed by his abductors.
