All major markets in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, have been shut in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

An order for the closure was given by the Chairman, Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Dare Alebiosu, in a press statement he gave to journalists.

It would be recalled that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors on Sunday at the age of 91.

Mr Alebiosu explained that the closure was in line with tradition to allow the sons and daughters of the land to mourn the departed royal father.

He declared that the closure of major markets within the jurisdiction of the local government was temporary and only aimed at showing honour and deep respect for the departed monarch.

“Effective Monday, 14th July 2025, the following markets shall remain closed: Ita-Ale Market; Ita-Osu Market and Oke-Aje Market. This closure is in line with our cultural traditions and to allow all sons and daughters of Ijebuland the space to mourn this monumental loss. Normal market activities shall resume on a date to be communicated in due course, after consultation with the appropriate traditional authorities,” the statement said.

Alebiosu appealed to traders and residents to abide by the directive, even as he prayed for the repose of the soul of the late Awujale of Ijebuland.

Oba Adetona died on the same day as President Muhamadu Buhari, with whom he had a very cordial relationship.

In July 2021, rumours were rife that the monarch had joined his ancestors, with many news platforms falling for the hoax.

The monarch’s media aide quickly dispelled the rumour.
