FG declares Tuesday public holiday to mourn Buhari

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in honour of the immediate past president of the country, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday.

The announcement was made in Abuja today, Monday, July 14, 2025.

The public holiday is in addition to earlier actions announced by the FG to honour the late president, including the observance of seven days of national mourning.

The Permanent Secretary in the Interior Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Minister, announced the public holiday on behalf of the Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Ojo said the holiday is aimed at showing the president deserved respect for his service to the nation and his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.

He said the late president served with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of the country.

“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Ojo said in the statement.

The minister implored Nigerians to use the day to honour the late president’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, in line with his vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria.

The statement reiterated earlier announcement by the FG that the the national flags would continue to fly at half-mast for the seven-day mourning period from Sunday, 13th July, 2025.

The minister also conveyed the “deepest condolences” of the FG to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.
