The President of the Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in Lagos State, Dr Solomon Ogbonna Aguene, has alleged that electorates of Igbo extraction were not allowed to vote or be voted for in the just concluded local government elections in Lagos State.

Aguene, in an interview he granted the Nigerian Tribune in his Ikoyi residence, complained bitterly about the treatment meted out to his compatriots.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo leader lamented that there had been a pattern of disenfranchisement of the Igbos in the elections carried out in Lagos for years now.

He alleged that the Igbos were not given the opportunity to contest for local Government Chairmanship and councillorship positions despite their contributions to the economic and political growth of the state.

He said the Igbos were not being treated unfairly, adding that there were only one or two Igbo persons as Vice Chairmen of Local Governments.

Aguene said there was no democracy in Lagos State. He said what existed was opportunists grabbing power and ruling.

He said a lack of democracy was resulting in voter apathy, as many people cannot see the need to waste their time, as their votes failed to count.

There is voter apathy in Lagos and Nigeria because Nigerians are tired of voting for opportunists

Aguene said the Igbos were the ones investing heavily in Lagos and deserved to be given the opportunity.
