The teenager, Soliudeen Majekodunmi, who strangled his girlfriend, Sofia Okeowo, in January 2022, has been sentenced to death alongside his bestie, Mustakeem Balogun.

The third accomplice, Lukmon Abdulgafar, will spend the rest of his life in jail.

The fourth accused person, Waris Oladeinde, was released by the court on March 22, 2022, for lack of evidence.

During the proceedings at an Ogun High Court, it was established that Sofia had gone to visit her boyfriend, Soliudeen, in his apartment.

They had a good time eating and drinking before proceeding to engage in sexual intercourse. It was during the intercourse that Soliudeen viciously strangled Sofia, with Mustakeem bursting into the room to assist him in completing the heinous task.

The two friends thereafter beheaded Sofia, cut parts of her thighs and stuffed her headless body into a sack.

Sofia’s head was then taken to Lukmon’s house to be burnt with a local burner for money ritual purposes.

The case blew open when community youths caught the trio burning Sofia’s head in a local burner, while reciting incantations.

They were rounded up by the youths who recorded the scene and posted it online. It immediately went viral.

They were subsequently handed over to the police, who arraigned them in court. The case has been on since then, before terminating in July 2025.

Ogun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade, lauded the judgment, saying that the convicts had been conclusively excluded from civilised society for the foreseeable future.

He expressed pride in the work carried out by the prosecution prosecutors at the Ministry of Justice who secured justice despite challenges.

Ogungbade said his ministry would continue to spare no expense in its quest for justice.

He advised young ones to have vocational skills or gainful employment rather than entertaining the illusion that they could become rich by making rituals.

The commissioner also urged the public to return to the traditional values of hard work and maintain a disdain for crime.

It would be recalled that Soliu’s case trended widely on social media in 2022 after he was caught with the head of his girlfriend.

He confessed at the time that he learnt to do ritual on Facebook because he wanted to be rich and be able to ride exotic cars like he saw on social media.
