The police in Osun State have arrested an Islamic cleric, identified simply as Kadiri, for allegedly having carnal knowledge of an eight-year-old girl in Ede, Osun State.
The suspect committed the act at Babasanya-Araka, Ede, Osun State, leading to a protest by an angry mob who were intent on taking the law into their own hands.
The Public Relations Officer of the Osun Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, told the Punch that police officers were mobilised to the scene to rescue the suspect from the mob.
He said men of the Amotekun security outfit were there ahead of the police, and they handed over the suspect to the police team.
The spokesperson of Amotekun, Idowu Yusuf, said the suspect is an Imam of a mosque.
He was also said to be an Arabic school teacher in the area.
A witness disclosed that the victim was discovered bleeding by her mother and questioned.
She then narrated what transpired between her and the Imam when she went out a few hours earlier.
It was reported that the little girl had gone missing for a few hours on Saturday, leading to a search being called out for her.
She was later found crying and bleeding. Her parents rushed her to a hospital in Ede, where she was checked.
The hospital allegedly confirmed that the little girl had been violated.
