Lagos monarch dethrones six chiefs for attending Labour Party campaign

The Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Oyeyinka Aremu Aromire Oyegbemi, has removed six of his chiefs from office for attending a Labour Party campaign rally without his permission.

The traditional ruler made the decision public following a palace meeting held on Monday, June 30, 2025.

According to a statement released by the palace, the chiefs were dethroned for participating in the Labour Party’s campaign flag-off in Apapa, Lagos, without obtaining prior approval from the monarch—an act deemed a serious breach of protocol.

The affected chiefs include: Chief Lateef Ojora (Bale Alaba Oro), Chief Saliu Biliamin (Bale Alafia Dodoro), Chief Taiwo Hassan (Bale Oke Ira), Chief Idris Ojora (Bale Abule Kere), Chief Hakeem Oseni (Bale Mosafejo Amukoko) and Chief Sule Balogun (Balogun of Abule Kere)

The palace statement explained that the chiefs were summoned for questioning after the monarch learned of their attendance at the political event.

“In a tone marked by disappointment and authority, Kabiyesi emphasised that their actions violated the core responsibilities of their titles,” the statement read.

“He reminded all chiefs that they must act only with his express consent, as they serve to represent him and uphold the kingdom’s traditions.”

Oba Oyegbemi’s decision to dethrone the six chiefs highlights his dedication to preserving order and unity within the traditional leadership.

He also used the occasion to praise the current government’s development projects in Ojora Land and reaffirmed his continued support for the administration.

The palace concluded by stressing the importance of transparency, loyalty, and proper conduct among traditional leaders in political engagements.
