Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Adebayo Salami, widely known as Oga Bello, has stated that he will not be leaving behind any properties for his children, emphasising that he prioritised investing in their education instead.

In a recent interview with the Nigerian Tribune, the celebrated Yoruba movie icon revealed that he made a deliberate choice early in life—especially after becoming a polygamist—to channel his resources into providing quality education for his children rather than amassing wealth or real estate to bequeath to them.

“I don’t plan to leave properties for my children. I only need two houses—one in Lagos and one in my hometown. If there’s any money left in my account, they can share it. Education is my true legacy,” he said.

Oga Bello, who began his acting career in 1964 with the Young Concert Party led by the late Baba Mero, shared that he lacked parental support in his own educational journey, which influenced his commitment to ensuring his 18 children all received at least a first degree.

Several of his children, including the popular actor Femi Adebayo, have built successful careers in the entertainment industry.

However, he clarified that he never pressured any of them to follow in his footsteps. Instead, he allowed them to pursue acting only if they excelled academically.

“I didn’t drag them into acting. They came into it out of passion. When they wanted to follow me to rehearsals, I would only let them come if they had good grades,” he explained.

Reflecting on ageing and retirement, Oga Bello highlighted the personal responsibility of preparing for old age, which he believes is often neglected in Nigeria.

“Old age has its challenges. Preparation is personal, and many professions in Nigeria don’t take it seriously. I’ve invested in my children, and I believe they’ll take care of me in my old age,” he concluded.
