Teenage girl commits su!cide after being gang r3ped for 3 days by two taxi drivers in SA
A 17-year-old female student, Athabile Khanyi, has d!ed by su!cide after she was brutally gang-r3ped in Inanda, Durban, South Africa.
This was disclosed by the advocacy group, Women for Change, in a statement on Monday, June 30, 2025.
The group asked how many more would d!e before GBV and femicide are declared a national disaster in the country.
Athabile was allegedly kidnapped by two men in a taxi on June 6, 2025, while she was waiting for her ride at a taxi stop, according to WFC.
She was allegedly forced to take drugs and subjected to repeated rapes.
The teenager was released on the third day by the men. After being freed, she opened up to her family about her experience, but it left her feeling alone and without hope.
Athabile was later found unresponsive and rushed to the hospital. Sadly, she passed away from her wounds. However, her family discovered a suicide note in which she named her assailants.
Police have commenced a probe, but no one has been arrested yet.
Athabile was a Grade 11 pupil at Makhapha Combined School in Maphephetheni, Inanda.
