Nigerian gospel singer ‘New Jerusalem’ passes away

Gospel singer, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve

Nigerian gospel singer Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, better known as New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53.

Ikyereve’s demise has thrown the Benue Christian community into mourning.

He was known for transforming Tiv Swange rhythms into a gospel sound that connected deeply with both local and international audiences.

His influence stretched far beyond Nigeria.

Former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the late singer’s residence in Makurdi, alongside members of the Brethren Prayer Group.

He described the late gospel singer as “a devoted Christian whose songs deeply touched my heart.”

Ortom also shared a memory of watching an Australian programme where a Tiv man played Ikyereve’s music while teaching—a moment he described as proof of the singer’s global impact.

Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the late singer’s elder brother, thanked Ortom for his consistent support throughout Israel’s illness. He revealed that one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” in honour of the former governor’s kindness.

Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo led prayers during the visit.

New Jerusalem is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children.

The late gospel singer will be buried on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
