Former First Lady of Ondo State, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has responded to traditionalists in Owo who laid curses on her for allegedly insulting the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye.
In a strongly worded Facebook post, she dismissed the curses as “misplaced” and called out what she described as “misguided gods,” asking why they’ve failed to act against the rising wave of kidnappings in the region.
The controversy began after the Ondo State Government demolished a Cenotaph built by her late husband, former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, in memory of victims of the 2022 St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church massacre in Owo.
The state explained that the monument’s location—directly opposite the king’s palace—had triggered public complaints.
Unconvinced, Mrs. Akeredolu criticised both Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Olowo, calling the governor an “enabler” and referring to the monarch as a “baby oba.”
Her comments ignited backlash, leading to public condemnation and curses from local traditionalists, who accused her of disrespecting their revered ruler.
In a fiery reaction, she wrote on Facebook:
“It is the mother of their children they are cursing,” accompanied by several “return to sender” hand emojis.
She added, “Notin do me!”
The ex-First Lady, identifying herself with hashtags like #ProudlyIgbo and #AdaOwere I, dismissed the spiritual threats:
“Only a believer will be scared of carved wooden gods. AdaOwere1 no send!”
She further questioned why the so-called gods and their followers have remained silent as kidnappers continue to terrorise Owo and other parts of Ondo State.
“Where are your gods when kidnappers come knocking?” she asked rhetorically.
