MultiChoice halves decoder price to N10,000 to battle subscriber decline

DSTV

MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a 50% price cut on its DStv decoder, reducing the cost from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000, in a strategic move to win back subscribers and counter a steady decline in customer numbers.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, explaining that the initiative is part of the ‘We Got You’ campaign, designed to reward loyal customers and make premium entertainment more affordable.

“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day,” Ugbe stated.

“The campaign is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans.”

According to the statement, DStv is repositioning itself as a daily value platform, encouraging content exploration across a wide range of genres such as movies, drama, children’s shows, and news, beyond just sports.

In addition to the decoder price slash, MultiChoice is offering a limited-time promotion: customers who pay for their current DStv package in full between June 16 and July 31, 2025, will receive a free upgrade to the next package tier.

The company explained that both initiatives are aimed at easing financial pressures on Nigerians, acknowledging the economic challenges facing households across the country.

This comes after the pay-TV operator lost approximately 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025.

It’s also worth noting that MultiChoice Nigeria increased the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages three times in the past year: first in April 2023, followed by another hike in November 2023, and a third announced in April 2024, which took effect on May 1, 2024.
