Prof. selling vegetables urges Nigerian youths: Combine education with vocational skills

Professor Nasir Hassan-Wagini, a plant resources expert from Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) in Katsina State, has called on Nigerian youths and graduates to embrace small-scale businesses and vocational skills alongside their formal education.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, June 23, 2025, at a weekly market in Batsari where he sells vegetables, Professor Hassan-Wagini shared how his humble beginnings in farming influenced his current ventures.

He emphasised that being a professor had not stopped him from engaging in agribusiness.

“I urge NCE, diploma, and degree holders to start small businesses in their communities instead of remaining idle,” he said. “I’m a professor, yet I sell vegetables. Young people should not feel too proud to take up honest work.”

Hassan-Wagini stressed that self-reliance is crucial for a successful life, encouraging youths to stop searching endlessly for white-collar jobs and instead venture into agriculture or other small businesses.

He believes merging education with vocational training is the key to sustainability.

“What matters is your contribution to society,” he added. “Start small, be productive, and combine your education with practical skills.”

A fellow trader in the market, Uzairu, described the professor as an exceptional individual who is humble, trustworthy, and respected in the community.

“He relates well with everyone, and we enjoy being around him,” he said.
