Three days after Justice E.G. Umukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court was abducted by gunmen disguised in police uniforms, his family is still waiting to hear from the kidnappers.

The judge was taken around 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from a popular eatery opposite the Ekeki Motor Park in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

The incident has heightened tensions in the city, which is already grappling with an ongoing cult war.

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reportedly directed security agencies to intensify efforts to locate and rescue the judge.

Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu Alonyenu, said investigations are underway, including analysis of digital footage from the scene.

Police spokesperson Musa Mohamed emphasised that all available security tools, including crime mapping and inter-agency collaboration, are being deployed in the rescue operation.

He urged the public not to lose trust in law enforcement, stressing that the government remains committed to ensuring Justice Umukoro’s safe return.

Authorities also appealed to citizens to avoid interfering with the ongoing rescue efforts.
