A tragic accident in Lagos claimed the life of a commercial minibus driver after a 40-foot container-laden truck suffered a brake failure and fell on his vehicle.

The crash occurred on the morning of Sunday, June 22, 2025, along Old Ipaja Road near Agbotikuyo, en route to Iyana Ipaja.

According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the containerised Mack truck (registration number MUS 729 XY) lost control due to brake failure and fell onto the minibus, commonly known as “Korope.”

The violent impact resulted in the immediate death of the driver. However, in a swift response, LASTMA officials rescued three uninjured passengers — two women and one man — who were later handed over to medical emergency services for further assessment.

The crash led to major traffic disruptions as the overturned truck blocked more than half of the roadway.

LASTMA officers quickly deployed traffic management strategies to ease the congestion, especially on adjoining routes like Shofunde and Olufunlayo.

The truck driver, who attempted to flee the scene, was caught by LASTMA personnel and handed over to security operatives from the Elere and Area ‘G’ Police Divisions.

A coordinated response involving the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), the Nigeria Police Force, and LASTMA ensured the scene was secured, the remains of the deceased recovered, and normal traffic flow restored.

Honourable Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and stressed the critical importance of vehicle safety checks.

“Every articulated truck must undergo proper mechanical inspection, especially of the brake system, before hitting the road. These preventable tragedies highlight the urgent need for strict compliance,” he stated.
