A magistrate court in Kano has sentenced popular TikTok content creator, Abubakar Usman—widely known as Kilina—to one year in a correctional centre over videos deemed indecent and offensive.
Presided over by Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan of Court No. 21, the court, however, granted the TikToker an option of paying a N100,000 fine in lieu of serving jail time.
In addition, he was ordered to pay N30,000 as compensation to the Kano State Film Censorship Board for “wasting the board’s time.”
Kilina was convicted after the court found him guilty of promoting indecent conduct, cross-dressing in several of his videos, and using vulgar language—all violations according to a case filed by the Kano State Film Censorship Board.
During the sentencing, the magistrate cautioned Kilina against repeating such acts and warned that any future offense would attract a stricter penalty without the option of a fine.
Following the ruling, reactions poured in from Kilina’s fans on social media.
While many sympathised with the content creator, others remarked that his videos had begun to cross societal boundaries.
