Several worshippers narrowly escaped death on Monday after a partially constructed two-storey building collapsed on a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in the Somolu area of Lagos State.

According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the building gave way during the decking stage of construction.

He confirmed that one of the pillars from the collapsing structure crashed onto the church building, identified as RCCG Liberty Parish located at 5 Craig Street, causing partial damage.

“Upon arrival of the agency’s response team, it was observed that a two-storey building under construction had collapsed during the decking process,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “Preliminary investigations by the Cobra response team revealed that the fallen structure was one of two buildings under construction on the site.”

He noted that the precise cause of the collapse was still unknown at the time of reporting. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded as workers and worshippers managed to flee before emergency personnel arrived.

A thorough search and rescue operation confirmed that no one was trapped beneath the debris. “No injuries were recorded, and all occupants escaped unharmed,” he added.

The agency also carried out sensitisation at the site to caution residents and onlookers against approaching the unstable ruins.
