Catholic priest, Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, has publicly criticised Benue State Governor, Fr. Hyacinth Alia, for his inconsistent approach to governance and security, particularly in the handling of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and rising violence in the state.

In a social media post, Fr. Ugwu faulted Governor Alia for preventing Labour Party’s Peter Obi from visiting IDP camps in April 2025, only to now call on the Federal Government for help in addressing the worsening insecurity in Benue.

Peter Obi had reportedly intended to visit the camps but was barred by security operatives.

Governor Alia later explained in an interview with TVC that Obi’s visit was stopped because his “intentions were unclear” and that he failed to follow proper communication protocols.

Reacting to recent killings in the state, Fr. Ugwu argued that the ultimate responsibility lies with the governor.

He dismissed claims that state governors are powerless due to a lack of control over federal security agencies, pointing out the irony in how Governor Alia seemed to have enough influence to prevent Obi’s visit but now claims helplessness in the face of mass killings.

Fr. Ugwu also commented on a viral video showing security agents escorting a large herd of cows in the state, contrasting the protection given to cattle with the state’s failure to protect human lives and property.

He urged Governor Alia to take proactive steps rather than shifting blame, insisting that leadership demands accountability and decisive action in the face of crisis.
