Air India flight crashes with 242 onboard shortly after takeoff (Video)

A London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, Flight 171, crashed moments after departing from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

The ill-fated aircraft carried 242 people, including two pilots and 10 cabin crew members.

According to India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a mayday signal was sent before the jet crashed just outside the airport perimeter in what officials have labelled a tragic accident.

Eyewitness accounts described scenes of chaos and thick black smoke billowing from the crash site. Emergency responders were quickly deployed to the area.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu expressed deep sorrow over the disaster. The crash occurred in a densely populated zone, raising concerns over potential civilian casualties, though officials had not confirmed the number of deaths or survivors as of press time.

Air India has acknowledged the crash and is cooperating with emergency services and government agencies.
