Speeding Toyota truck kills woman in Lagos

A female pedestrian lost her life on Saturday, June 7, after being hit by a speeding black Toyota Tundra at the Mosalasi roundabout along New Ipaja Road in the Ipaja area of Lagos.

The vehicle, with registration number FST 222 HV, reportedly veered off the road at high speed, mounted the pedestrian walkway, and fatally struck the woman. The force of the impact also sent the truck crashing into a nearby livestock business, damaging its perimeter fence and an adjacent advertising billboard.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver tried to escape but was swiftly apprehended by officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

He was later handed over to police officers from the Gowon Estate Division for further investigation.

The victim’s body was recovered and turned over to the Nigeria Police Force, while the driver remains in custody and is undergoing interrogation.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki confirmed the incident, describing it as a tragic reminder of the dangers of reckless driving. He extended condolences to the bereaved family, saying,

“This is a deeply sorrowful occurrence that underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving. We mourn with the family of the deceased and pray earnestly that the Almighty grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
