Niger State teacher killed in his home hours after Eid celebration

Shock and sorrow gripped the town of Mokwa in Niger State on Saturday, June 7, 2025, following the gruesome murder of a popular secondary school teacher, Mallam Mohammed Abubakar Tayi, just a day after celebrating Eid with loved ones.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at his residence along Abattoir Road.

According to reports from residents, unidentified attackers broke into his home, killed him, and escaped with his motorcycle.

Mallam Mohammed was last seen in high spirits on Friday, joyfully marking Eid with his family and exchanging greetings with neighbours.

“He was full of life yesterday, celebrating with his family and greeting neighbours. We woke up today to hear he’s been killed,” a local resident said in disbelief.

Until his untimely death, Mallam Mohammed served at Government Day Secondary School in Kpege, now renamed Bokani Secondary School.

He was widely respected for his commitment to education and his deep passion for mentoring young people.

His death has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving students, colleagues, and residents mourning the loss of a man they described as humble, kind, and dedicated.
