
Renowned Nigerian highlife musician and folklorist, Mike Ejeagha, whose song “Gwo Gwo Ngwo’ went viral last year, has passed away at the age of 95.
He died on Friday evening around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness.
His death was confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha.
Celebrated for his masterful storytelling through music, Ejeagha was known for blending Igbo folklore and proverbs into compelling songs that resonated with audiences across generations.
His contributions to music and culture earned him a lasting place in Nigeria’s artistic history, particularly through his influential radio presence in the 1980s.
In 2024, Ejeagha’s legacy found new life when one of his classic tracks inspired the viral “Gwo Gwo Gwo” dance challenge, popularised by comedian and skit maker, Brain Jotter.
