Father of student accused of exam malpractice petitions IGP, accuses school of spreading falsehood

The father of a senior secondary school student accused of cheating during the ongoing West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, calling for an investigation into what he describes as defamation and unlawful actions by school staff and police officers.
Mr. Elisha Imoukhuede, father of the SS3 student at Complete Child Development College, Aule, Akure, submitted the petition after the student was reportedly caught using an Android phone during the examination — an allegation that led to serious conflict.
According to Punch Metro, the school’s Vice Principal, Mr. Alexander Rotifa, caught the student allegedly engaging in malpractice, prompting an incident that escalated when the boy’s mother was accused of mobilising thugs to assault the VP.
Police later arrested five individuals, including the student’s mother.
However, in his petition seen on Tuesday, Imoukhuede challenged the school’s account, asserting that his son was unfairly accused and the incident was misrepresented.
He explained that on May 28, 2025, his son brought his mother’s phone to school, which she used for her business, and it was seized by a teacher for allegedly breaching school policy.
Despite efforts to retrieve the device the following day, the school refused to release it to the student’s older brother, prompting the mother to visit the school in person. She was also denied the phone, even after explaining its business significance.
The situation reportedly escalated later that evening when, according to Imoukhuede, the Vice Principal arrived at their neighbourhood with unidentified men and allegedly abducted a 13-year-old relative who was mistaken for the accused student.
The boy, a FUTA Secondary School student, was said to have been taken forcefully while running an errand, leading to panic and a neighbourhood pursuit amid fears of a kidnapping attempt.
During the confusion, the Vice Principal reportedly sustained a minor injury, though the exact cause remains unclear. Imoukhuede noted that video evidence exists of the entire incident.
He also accused the school of spreading false statements about his son’s involvement in examination malpractice, which he said has caused emotional distress to the boy.
Imoukhuede’s petition demands a thorough investigation into the conduct of the school staff and a disciplinary review of police officers from the Okuta Elerinla Division, whom he alleges were used to intimidate his family.
He called on the Inspector General to ensure:
A full inquiry into the school’s and officers’ actions
Protection of his son from further defamation or victimisation
Sanctions against anyone found culpable in the alleged unlawful acts.
