Elon Musk has launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump’s proposed federal spending bill, describing it as a “disgusting abomination” packed with excessive and irresponsible expenditures.
The tech billionaire and X owner took to his platform on Tuesday, just days after stepping down from his role as a special government employee leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to publicly criticise the controversial legislation, The Independent UK reported.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk posted on X.
He warned that the proposed legislation would balloon the U.S. budget deficit to a staggering $2.5 trillion, placing an unsustainable financial burden on American taxpayers.
“Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong,” he added.
The bill, backed by Trump and now under Senate review, seeks to implement sweeping tax cuts while ramping up spending on military operations, oil drilling, and border security. However, it also proposes deep reductions to Medicaid and food assistance programs.
According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the plan could drive the national debt up by $3.8 trillion over the next ten years and would disproportionately benefit the country’s wealthiest citizens, while reducing support for low-income Americans.
During his tenure at DOGE, Musk had repeatedly voiced concern that the bill contradicted the department’s mission to streamline and cut federal spending. Speaking at a public event over the weekend, he reiterated his discontent.
“I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, doesn’t decrease it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” Musk said. “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful. But I don’t know if it can be both. My personal opinion.”
In response to Musk’s criticism, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt downplayed the remarks and reaffirmed Trump’s support for the proposal.
“The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn’t change the president’s opinion,” she said. “This is one big beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.”
The legislation includes $1.5 trillion in proposed spending cuts, which are intended to justify $4.5 billion in tax reductions. If the targeted savings are not achieved, the bill’s tax breaks would be scaled back accordingly.
