A woman has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a child mid-flight after he made derogatory remarks about her appearance.

Kristy Crampton was taken into custody by Sanford Airport Police at the Orlando-Sanford International Airport on Monday, May 26, after allegedly attacking a child aboard Allegiant Flight 2885 bound for Hagerstown, Maryland.

According to reports, the incident began when the child insulted Crampton by calling her “fat” and comparing her to “Miss Piggy.”

Witnesses told police the child also commented that Crampton couldn’t fit in her seat. In response, Crampton allegedly struck the child with her fists, hit his head with a water bottle, and slammed his head against the plane window.

The child reportedly used his arms to shield himself during the assault.

Crampton admitted to taking the child’s phone and claimed he was rude and pushed her arm off the armrest, prompting her to start “smacking” him.

Police say her actions exceeded normal disciplinary behaviour. One witness described it as abuse, not correction.

Crampton now faces a felony child abuse charge.

She appeared before a Seminole County judge on Tuesday, May 27, and was granted a $10,000 bond with a no-contact order issued.

The FBI has been notified of the case.
