Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, have successfully rescued eight passengers who were kidnapped in the Akoko North area of Ondo State.
The rescue mission was launched in response to a distress call that averted what could have become another tragic case of abduction for ransom.
During a press briefing held on Sunday, May 25, 2026, at the Amotekun Corps command headquarters in Akure, the Corps Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed that the kidnapping took place between the towns of Ase and Isua, near Ishe, Iboropa, and Ugbe — areas known to be frequent targets of criminal activity.
“Today is another good story. Between these towns, kidnappers struck, but one of the victims managed to alert our distress call number,” Adeleye said. “Fortunately, we have a mobile Amotekun unit stationed near the Edo-Ondo boundary around the Ibilo axis, and they responded swiftly.”
He said the operation led to the safe recovery of eight victims, including Samuel Okunola, the driver of one of the two attacked vehicles, which were travelling from Ibilo to Ikare.
Other rescued individuals were identified as Alausa, Kasali, Paul, Sani, and Moses.
The driver of the second vehicle reportedly sustained machete injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.
Six other passengers, who suffered minor injuries, were also rescued from the forest.
Adeleye also issued a stern warning to the public, particularly farmers, advising them to report any suspicious activities, especially those involving armed herders.
“The Ondo State government does not permit anyone to use firearms while rearing cows. If you see anyone doing so, report immediately. They are not invisible — people see them every day. The Amotekun Corps can respond within three minutes anywhere in the state,” he assured.
He emphasised the state government’s zero-tolerance approach to ransom payments in kidnapping cases.
“All those rescued were freed without paying a dime. Ondo State has said no to kidnapping for ransom,” Adeleye declared.
One of the rescued victims, 52-year-old driver Samuel Okunola, recounted his ordeal and praised the swift intervention of the security outfit.
“We were on our way from Ibilo when they attacked us. Thank God Amotekun was close by. They came immediately and chased the kidnappers away. No ransom was paid. We thank God and His Excellency for supporting Amotekun,” he said.
