Two arrested over brutal murder, burning of young woman at Mile 12, Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two key suspects involved in the gruesome murder of a young woman in the Gangare area of Mile 12.
The victim, who hailed from Nasarawa State, was killed and her body set ablaze on May 24, 2025, allegedly at the instigation of an estranged lover.
Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday, May 25.
He revealed that the victim’s ex-boyfriend, who is currently on the run, conspired with the suspects to carry out the attack after the woman refused to reconcile with him.

Dispelling circulating rumours, the police clarified that the incident had no link to blasphemy or religious provocation, as falsely speculated online.
“Preliminary investigations indicate the deceased had been living in the slum with her northern relatives.
While her profession remains unknown, it is confirmed she is from Nasarawa State, not a Yoruba woman,” Hundeyin stated.
He explained that the murder was a calculated act driven by the ex-boyfriend’s obsession, which led to a conspiracy with accomplices who brutally murdered and set the victim’s body on fire.
“The killing was premeditated and rooted in personal issues, not religious or ethnic conflict. There is no indication that blasphemy played any role,” the statement emphasised.
Currently, two suspects are in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and are assisting police in efforts to apprehend the remaining individuals, including the prime suspect.
The police assured the public that peace has been restored in the area, dismissing rumours of ethnic tension or possible reprisal attacks.
Residents were urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could incite panic.
“The Command is fully committed to ensuring justice is served and will continue updating the public as investigations progress,” Hundeyin concluded.
