A female student of Seico Secondary School in Ikangba, Ijebu Ode, lost her life on Friday after a truck lost control and rammed into her and a fellow student, who sustained critical injuries.

The students were on their way home after sitting for their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The fatal crash occurred along the recently rehabilitated Ikangba/Agoro road.

According to reports, the truck, which was coming from the Molipa axis, veered off its lane and hit the students as they walked home.

Eyewitness and chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights, Eko Nicholas, confirmed the incident.

He said the students were visibly holding their examination question papers, indicating they had just completed their exams.

“One of the girls died instantly while the other is in critical condition. We’re all hoping she pulls through,” Nicholas stated.

He criticised the state government for not installing speed bumps or traffic-calming measures on the road, which he said has become a frequent site of deadly accidents.

“This brings the number of lives lost on this road since February to six,” he lamented, calling once again for the construction of speed breakers and installation of streetlights to prevent further tragedies.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency’s Public Relations Officer, Babatunde Akinbiyi, also confirmed the incident, stating that one schoolgirl was confirmed dead.
