Police corporal arrested over fatal shooting of 14-year-old WASSCE candidate in Ibadan

A police corporal has been arrested in Ibadan for allegedly shooting and killing a 14-year-old student, Kehinde Alade, who was on his way to sit for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) along Gbagi-Alakia Road on Tuesday.
Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, revealed that the state Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola, has ordered a thorough investigation, which will be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
According to police accounts, the tragic event occurred during a joint traffic enforcement operation involving the police and the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).
Kehinde’s father, Odunayo Alade, who was driving a black Honda with registration number FST 639 JJ, allegedly attempted to evade arrest while driving against traffic.
In the process of fleeing, he reportedly rammed into patrol vehicles belonging to both OYRTMA and the police.
Authorities said barricades were set up to halt the vehicle, but Alade allegedly breached them.
A police corporal then fired at the car’s tyres in an attempt to immobilise it, but the bullet struck Kehinde, who was sitting in the back seat.
Kehinde was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was declared dead on arrival. His body has since been taken to the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
To maintain public order, Commissioner Adenola deployed tactical and intelligence teams, including the Police Mobile Force, to the area and other key locations in Ibadan.
The swift deployment reportedly helped restore calm and public safety.
“The Oyo State Police Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Kehinde Alade,” the statement added. “The Command is committed to justice and accountability, and further updates will be shared as the investigation unfolds.”
