A 33-year-old man, identified as Chinazum Nwaubani, has been arrested for attacking a 14-year-old girl with machete after she resisted a r@pe attempt on her in Obete Nchina Village, Ntighauzo community in Obingwa council area of Abia State.

The Punch reported that the victim, Felicia Anaba, was on her way to get firewood with her male twin in a bush in the village when the suspect accosted them, threatening them with a machete.

The male twin reportedly took to his heels while the suspect cornered the girl.

His attempt to intimidate the victim with the machete so as to r@pe her, however, failed as she put up a strong resistance, which infuriated the suspect.

Chinazum reportedly used his machete to inflict deep cuts on the victim’s head, leg and hand before he fled the scene, leaving her for dead.

The father of the victim, Mr. Chijioke Anaba, said he was alerted to the incident by the male twin who ran home.

He lamented that his daughter lost consciousness because of too much loss of blood from the machete cuts when the search party rescued her from the bush.

Anaba alleged that the Police at the Eastern Ngwa Division demanded the sum of N30,000 from him before they could register the matter for investigation.

He alleged that he paid the amount to the police and the suspect was arrested. He, however, expressed fears that the suspect, who hails from the same village as him, may be released from custody to return to continue his attack on his family.

He said the police told him the suspect was mentally deranged, which he said was not true.

“My daughter had fallen into a coma when she was rescued by the search party in the bush. We took her to the hospital and lodged a report with the Police at the Eastern Ngwa Division,” he narrated.

“The Police demanded N30,000 to investigate the matter, which I paid. They have arrested the suspect, but from what’s happening, I am afraid that Chinazum may be released from detention to continue his attack and k!ll my daughter.

“The police should do their job because the boy is now a risk to the people in the village. The Police are saying he is a madman, but it’s not true.”

Anaba called on the wife of the state governor, Priscilla Otti, to come to the aid of his daughter as she may be disabled following the deep machete cuts inflicted on her by the suspect.

The Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident but refuted the allegations of monetary demand.

She said no one had stepped forward with evidence that money was collected before the police commenced the investigation.

She said anyone with such evidence should report to the Complaint Response Unit for proper investigation.

Recounting what happened to the twins, she said, “While at the farm, one Chinazum Nwaubani, aged 33 years and a resident of the same village, allegedly approached them armed with a machete. He reportedly grabbed the female twin, ordered her to lie down and remove her clothes. When she refused, the suspect allegedly attacked her with the machete, inflicting injuries on her head, back, and leg”.
