See moment WASSCE student was shot dead by police chasing his father’s car in Oyo State

A video has shown the moment a student heading to write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer.
The incident occurred along Gbagi Market Road in Egbeda Local Government Area.
The initial reports indicated that the student was in a car with his father and twin brother en route to the examination centre when a bullet hit him.
Eyewitnesses said police officers were pursuing a vehicle when one of them opened fire. A source identified as Ajani recounted, “The police were chasing a Hilux van when an officer fired shots. Sadly, one of the bullets hit the student.”
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
In response, angry youths carried the student’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat in Agodi, demanding justice and calling on Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene.
Reacting to the incident, the state government expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death.
The Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, in a statement, however, explained that contrary to the earlier report, the father of the deceased was the one being chased when the incident happened.
He described the event as “sad, shocking, and painful,” and promised a thorough investigation in collaboration with the state police command.
The government said that the incident occurred during a traffic enforcement operation carried out by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) with police support.
According to the government, the student’s father was driving against traffic in a black Honda Accord (plate number FST 639 JU), prompting officials to attempt an arrest.
A police officer reportedly fired a shot at the car’s tyre, but the bullet missed and struck the student instead. The officer involved is currently under investigation.
The government urged residents to remain calm, avoid mob action, and obey traffic rules.
It assured the public that justice would be served and measures would be put in place to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
A video of the moment the father of the deceased tried to evade the police has now emerged.
In the video, the man was being trapped by police vans, but he was manoeuvring himself out of the blockage each time they did, until a gunshot was heard.
