Seven schoolgirls arrested in South Africa for torturing their mate in hostel (video)
Seven teenage girls aged 13 and 14 have been arrested in Gauteng, South Africa, following a viral video that captured the assault of another teenage girl, sparking widespread outrage on social media.
National police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the arrests were made on Sunday, May 18, 2025, and the girls were released into the custody of their parents.
The suspects are facing charges of common assault.
The incident occurred in Bellevue, Johannesburg, on May 10, 2025.
In the widely circulated video, a teenage girl is seen seated on a bed, surrounded by several other girls.
After a brief argument, one of the girls approaches and slaps her. The victim remains seated and covers her face with her hands during the incident.
“A case of common assault was opened at the local police station, and the suspects were rounded up,” said Masondo.
The footage drew sharp criticism online, with many users demanding swift police action and calling attention to the need to address bullying and violence among teenagers.
