There is currently an outrage over a viral video showing a Nigerian man repeatedly slamming a table tennis bat on the head of his wife while their toddler wailed and tried to separate them.
The time of the incident was not disclosed, but from the video, it unfolded in the couple’s well-furnished living room.
Activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who posted the video, said the woman had visited the police to report the matter on several occasions but was turned back by the officers who insisted that it was a “family matter’ and that they needed to go and settle it themselves.
The activist said some concerned people reached out to him to help the woman.
The video shows the couple struggling, and the husband succeeds in wrestling the wife to the ground.
While holding on to her head with her weave, he proceeds to strike it and her arms with the sharp edge of the bat.
Their toddler can be heard wailing in the background and is later seen trying to hold on to his father in a fruitless bid to stop them from fighting.
The person recording appears to grab the child out of the camera frame as the video ends abruptly.
Netizens are querying why the person filming the scene did not step in to stop the assault.
Some of them are calling for the arrest of both the husband and the person who filmed the incident.
Gwamnishu said the person recording the scene might be a househelp or a relative.
“When you tell most of these women to leave the marriage, people say you are trying to encourage separation of true lovers. When it comes to this stage, flee! Run! There is no way you can stay. When it comes to this stage where the man wants to kill the wife or the wife wants to kill the husband, you need to leave”, he said.
