A final-year Mechanical Engineering student at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Nwachukwu Omiko, tragically passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, after collapsing during a football match on campus.
Despite immediate efforts by fellow students and the university’s health services, Omiko was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia.
The university’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Ubadire Agua, confirmed the incident, noting that Omiko was asthmatic.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, expressed deep condolences to Omiko’s family and the university community.
In response to the incident, the university management urged students to undergo health checks and to avoid strenuous activities if they have underlying health conditions.
