Jennifer James, a 49-year-old single mother from Berthoud, Colorado, who had bravely battled breast cancer four times over two decades, was tragically killed on April 28, 2025, when a stray bullet entered her home.
James was undergoing treatment for a fifth cancer diagnosis at the time of her death.
The alleged shooter, 20-year-old Ebenezer Worku, reportedly discharged his Glock 22 handgun while parked outside James’ residence.
Worku claimed the shooting was accidental, stating he was attempting to clear the firearm when it discharged.
One of the bullets pierced a window, striking James in the arm and chest. Despite managing to call 911, she succumbed to her injuries before emergency services arrived.
Authorities tracked Worku using surveillance footage and license plate reader data. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder under the “extreme indifference” statute.
Worku is currently held at the Larimer County Jail on a $1.25 million cash-only bond.
James’ eldest daughter, Ashley, expressed her grief, describing her mother as “the most selfless mom that anyone could ask for.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support James’ four children, with friends and family remembering her as “an incredible human being” .
A celebration of life for Jennifer James is scheduled for today, May 14, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Attendees are encouraged to wear bright colours in honour of her vibrant spirit.
