Residents of Marte Local Government Area in Borno State have fled their homes after a brutal attack by Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants on a military base in their community on Monday, May 12.

The terrorists killed four soldiers and took several residents captive.

Reports indicate that the militants arrived in large numbers, overwhelming the troops after a fierce battle in New Marte, located in the Lake Chad Basin region.

Following the attack, eyewitnesses confirmed that the terrorists gained control of the town, forcing thousands of residents to flee to Dikwa, a neighbouring local government area about 27 kilometres away.

“We spent the night in the bush, and many residents remain trapped. The terrorists have taken over the military base, stealing arms and ammunition,” a source told Leadership.

Another source added, “The terrorists have recaptured New Marte, and we are facing grave danger.”
