The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into an alleged assault on a female food vendor, Dooshima, by Private Christopher Emmanuel in Kula, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on May 6, 2025, and was formally reported two days later, is believed to have resulted from a dispute over unpaid debt.
Preliminary accounts suggest the altercation escalated after the soldier accused the woman of insulting him during a phone conversation.
Captain Abdullahi Lawal Osabo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 401 Special Forces Brigade, stated that Private Emmanuel has been taken into custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
He assured the public that the Army remains committed to justice and upholding human rights.
The Army emphasised its zero-tolerance policy for indiscipline and human rights violations, promising disciplinary measures if the soldier is found guilty. The public was also encouraged to report such incidents to the military’s Human Rights Desk rather than turning to social media initially.
