Two Abuja co-wives hospitalised after consuming herbal mixture to arouse s*xual desire in their husband

Kayan mata

Two women from Dakwa community in the Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have reportedly been hospitalised after consuming a herbal mixture intended to enhance their husband’s sexual desire, following his recent marriage to a third wife.

The herbal product, locally known as kayan mata in Hausa, is traditionally used to stimulate male libido.

According to Daily Trust, the incident occurred three days after the women’s husband, Musa Muhammad, took a new wife from his hometown in Gusau, Zamfara State.

Muhammad confirmed that the two women, whose names were not disclosed, were rushed to a clinic in Madalla, Niger State.

They were diagnosed with internal organ damage believed to be caused by the herbal mixture. Both women underwent surgery and were discharged a week later.

Muhammad explained that the herbalist who usually supplied the liquid version of the mixture provided a powdered form this time. The women reportedly mixed it with milk before consumption.

He recounted, “I was informed that my two wives were seriously ill. I had spent the night at the house of my new bride. When I got there, I saw them writhing in pain and immediately called a nurse. After no improvement, I took them to a clinic where tests and surgery were conducted.”

Efforts are currently underway to locate the female herbalist for investigation to prevent further harm to others.

Medical expert Dr. Taiye Anifowose, a gynaecologist, cautioned against the use of such substances, warning that they could seriously damage internal organs and impair reproductive health.

She urged public health agencies, families, and community leaders to educate women on the risks associated with these herbal concoctions.
