A devastating tragedy has struck the community of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, where five siblings have reportedly died from suspected food poisoning.

Their mother is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

The heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday, May 3, 2025, leaving the family and the entire community in deep mourning.

According to the children’s father, 79-year-old retired soldier Pa Robinson Aghalu, the situation unfolded shortly after the children consumed a meal prepared by their mother.

The children began to show symptoms including severe stomach pain and vomiting, prompting an urgent rush to multiple hospitals.

“Despite all efforts, five of my six children died at different hospitals—among them a nearby maternity clinic, Iyienu Mission Hospital, and Crown Hospital,” Aghalu recounted.

The children’s mother, who also fell ill with similar symptoms, is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

A doctor attending to her case has reportedly confirmed that the symptoms are consistent with food poisoning.

The couple’s only surviving child was not at home during the incident, as he was staying with a relative for study purposes.

The family is reportedly in desperate need of financial assistance to cover medical bills and other related costs.

Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating that food samples have been collected for forensic testing.

“We’re aware of the situation and have secured the scene. Samples from the suspected meal have been sent for analysis, and our officers are engaging with residents to gather more information,” Ikenga said.

The remains of the children have been taken to a morgue, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
