The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the reasons behind the arrest of popular social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), stating that it stemmed from multiple petitions alleging serious financial misconduct.
In a statement released today, the EFCC said Otse was invited for questioning over these allegations but failed to honor repeated invitations.
His arrest, according to the Commission, was necessitated by the gravity of the accusations, not due to his outspoken criticisms of the agency.
While acknowledging Otse’s verbal attacks on the EFCC’s operations, the agency emphasized that his arrest was based strictly on legal grounds.
The commission noted that a valid remand order had been obtained and that VDM has since been granted administrative bail, pending the fulfillment of all conditions.
The EFCC urged the public to avoid speculating about its motives and assured Nigerians that due process would be followed, with charges to be filed once investigations are complete.
