Cyclist loses life after collision with truck in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified cyclist lost his life after a collision with a moving truck in the Ikeja area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, on Sunday.
Bakare-Oki explained that the fatal accident involved a cyclist and a heavily loaded truck bearing registration number BDG 610 YA. It occurred at Alausa Bus Stop, near ‘Radio’ on Kudirat Abiola Way, Ikeja.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the cyclist, while attempting to navigate from Kudirat Abiola Way to ‘Radio’ on Obafemi Awolowo Way, collided with the truck. In the process, he lost control, hit his head against the pavement, and died instantly from severe injuries,” Bakare-Oki said.
Eyewitnesses reported that the cyclist was using an earpiece and speaking on the phone at the time of the accident, leading to a lapse in concentration on the busy road.
LASTMA operatives quickly responded to the scene, securing the area to protect other road users and ease traffic congestion. Officers from the Alausa Police Division were also alerted and arrived promptly.
While managing traffic flow at the scene, LASTMA officials handed over the deceased’s body to the Police, who subsequently moved it to the mortuary at the General Hospital, Ikeja.
Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the deceased’s family and emphasised the need for strict adherence to road safety guidelines.
He urged cyclists to always wear protective gear and avoid distractions, particularly when sharing the road with motor vehicles.
