The funeral ceremony featured the chanting of the Our Father and other prayers recited in Latin.
Following the prayers, Pope Francis’s coffin was placed in the tomb, with Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlengo, sprinkling it with holy water as the Marian hymn “Regina Caeli” was sung.
A small group, including cardinals, Vatican officials, Pope Francis’s personal secretaries, and family members, attended the private burial.
April 26 marks the beginning of the Catholic Church’s nine-day mourning period, known as the “novendiales.”
During this time, cardinals will offer daily Masses for the repose of Pope Francis’s soul.
Starting Monday, the College of Cardinals will meet daily to deliberate on the future of the Church and the qualities required in the next pope.
The conclave to elect a new pope is expected to commence in the first week of May.
