The Philadelphia Chapter of the Black Students Union (BSU) has initiated a $25,000 fundraising campaign to support the funeral arrangements for Olatunji Bolaji, a 77-year-old Nigerian-born Uber driver who was shot and killed in Philadelphia.
Bolaji, who was a husband, father, and grandfather, lost his life on April 16, 2025, while waiting for a passenger outside the Byblos Hookah Lounge in Centre City.
He was reportedly caught in the crossfire when two men exited a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee and began shooting.
A bullet struck Bolaji in the back of the head, and he crashed a block away on Chestnut Street. As of Monday, the suspects remain unidentified and at large.
In response to the tragedy, BSU President Alex Morris launched a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of the Bolaji family.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the senseless and sudden loss of Olatunji Bolaji—a beloved 77-year-old father, grandfather, husband, and dedicated rideshare driver murdered while working,” the fundraiser description reads.
At the time of this report, $1,712 had been raised from 19 donors toward the $25,000 goal.
Morris explained that the BSU has had a close relationship with the Bolaji family and is stepping in to support his widow, Charice Bolaji, and their children during this painful time.
The funds are intended to cover immediate family needs, including $12,000 for funeral and memorial expenses, $5,000 for living costs during the mourning period, and $3,000 for grief counseling services.
Any remaining funds will go toward setting up a trust for Bolaji’s grandchildren, including one yet to be born.
To ensure transparency, Morris noted that all donations would be transferred directly to Charice Bolaji’s bank account.
If she is unable to receive the funds directly, Morris has pledged to deliver the money personally, with full documentation and receipts.
“Ola spent his life driving others home safely—it’s now our responsibility to help guide his family through this tragedy,” the campaign message reads. “Whether it’s $5, $50, or $500, every contribution makes a difference. Please share this fundraiser and keep the Bolaji family in your thoughts and prayers.”
