Philadelphia police are on the hunt for suspects involved in the fatal shooting of a 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, Olatunji Bolaji, in the course of his work.

The assailants also shot a 22-year-old passenger Bolaji was picking up.

The tragic incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, outside Byblos restaurant and hookah lounge on the 100 block of 18th Street.

According to Chief Inspector Scott Small, the violence appeared to have been preceded by a physical altercation.

Surveillance footage shows the 22-year-old man saying goodbye to friends in front of a black SUV.

As he entered the backseat, a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled up behind the SUV, and two men exited the vehicle to confront him.

Police say a fight broke out, and one of the assailants fired four shots. One bullet reportedly pierced the headrest and struck Bolaji in the back of the head.

Despite his injuries, Bolaji managed to drive a short distance before crashing the vehicle into a light pole on Chestnut Street.

He was found slumped halfway out of the driver’s seat and pronounced d3ad at the scene.

The 22-year-old passenger suffered gunshot wounds to the arm, chest, and stomach. He remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

Authorities say the suspects fled the scene in the Jeep, which may have had Massachusetts license plates. It was last seen on Sansom Street.

Bolaji’s family expressed their heartbreak, describing him as a hardworking father who was simply doing his job.

Uber released a statement expressing condolences:

“Our hearts break for the driver’s family and loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss. We are in contact with the authorities to support the investigation and ensure justice is served.”

Fellow rideshare drivers and advocates have voiced deep concerns over driver safety. Fabian Romero of the Independent Drivers Guild emphasised that drivers face constant danger and pledged to continue pushing for stronger protections.

Residents and business owners in the area also expressed shock and sadness over the violence.

“This is devastating,” said Michelle Kao, a local business owner. “People rely on Uber to get around safely, especially in areas like Rittenhouse. This shouldn’t happen.”
