Prominent Ugandan photographer, Saad Byakuleka, has tragically passed away following a deadly motorcycle collision on Thursday evening at Bugonga Junction, near the Air Base in Entebbe.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, confirmed the incident via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Yes, it’s true. A fatal accident occurred involving two motorcycles at Bugonga Junction near the Air Base.”
He added, “Both riders died instantly at the scene. Arrangements are being made to transfer the bodies to Mulago City Mortuary.”
Byakuleka, a celebrated figure in Uganda’s creative and entertainment circles, was identified as one of the two motorcyclists who lost their lives in the crash.
His sudden passing has triggered a wave of sorrow on social media, with fellow creatives, fans, and industry stakeholders paying tribute to what many called a promising talent in visual storytelling.
This tragic event adds to the increasing number of motorcycle-related deaths in Uganda.
According to the 2024 Annual Crime Report from the Uganda Police, 1,720 motorcyclists died in traffic accidents, accounting for 33% of all road fatalities. When combined with passenger deaths, the total rises to 2,334, representing nearly 47% of all traffic-related deaths.
The report cites reckless riding, speeding, and deteriorating road conditions as the primary causes behind most of these incidents.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish the specific cause of the crash involving Byakuleka at Bugonga Junction.
