The Rivers State Government has threatened legal action against the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), demanding the immediate refund of ₦300 million it claims was paid specifically for the hosting of the NBA’s 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) in the state.

This comes in response to the NBA’s assertion that the ₦300 million was an unconditional donation and not linked to any agreement regarding the AGC.

In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Rivers State Government, Hector Igbikiowubo, the state rejected the NBA’s claim, stressing that official records show the money was paid with a clear understanding that Rivers State would serve as the host for the 2025 AGC.

“The Rivers State Government categorically rejects the NBA’s recent claim that the ₦300 million paid was a ‘gift’ and had no bearing on the 2025 AGC hosting rights,” the statement read.

“Our records indicate that the payment was made following mutual consent that Rivers State would host the NBA’s 2025 conference.”

The statement explained that the state had acted in good faith, anticipating that hosting the event would bring significant economic and social benefits to its residents.

Condemning the NBA’s decision to relocate the conference despite the agreement, the state government described the move as “unethical” and a “breach of trust.”

“If the NBA fails to refund the ₦300 million promptly, the Rivers State Government will be forced to pursue all necessary legal avenues to recover the funds, which belong to the people of Rivers State,” it warned.

The government, however, reiterated its commitment to working with professional organizations, including the NBA, but emphasized that it would not tolerate any form of exploitation.
