One person has reportedly lost his life and four others were injured following a violent clash between rival cult groups near the main gate of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
A disturbing video posted on Facebook by Lamina Omotoyosi shows a man in a white shirt repeatedly striking another man on the head with a hammer, while two others stood nearby.
The victim, believed to be a former student of the polytechnic, was later rushed to a private hospital in Iree, but was turned away. He passed away while being taken to another hospital in Osogbo.
Eyewitnesses claimed four others, suspected to be students, sustained injuries during the confrontation, which also involved gunfire.
According to one observer, security operatives had earlier met with known cult members amid rumours of an impending clash, but the conflict still erupted.
Dr. Tope Abiola, the Dean of Student Affairs, confirmed the incident but noted that the critically injured individual was no longer a student.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed the injured victims are receiving treatment.
