LASTMA

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to motorists that engaging in activities such as eating, drinking, or smoking while driving constitutes an offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

This alert was posted on the agency’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, April 9. The post emphasized that such behaviours fall under distracted driving, which can endanger lives and disrupt traffic safety.

According to the law, offenders may face serious consequences including:

  1. Vehicle impoundment,

  2. Up to three months imprisonment,

  3. Or six months of community service—subject to the court’s ruling and the severity of the offence.

LASTMA stressed that the legislation is part of efforts to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by inattentive driving.
